Preparation for Employment and Further Education (Sports) Level 3 at St Helens College

Course description

This course is designed to enhance your employability skills within the sports sector.
You'll build upon your coaching and instruction knowledge, existing communication skills. You'll also have the opportunity to work with different community groups, taking part in coaching/practical sessions.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Developing personal study skills
  • Developing problem solving skills
  • Interpersonal and written communication
  • Planning, preparing and leading sports activities within an event
  • Refining leadership skills
  • Understanding sports coaching skills
  • Taking part in sport for personal improvement
  • Introduction to safeguarding children

These sessions are delivered in classrooms as well as in the sports hall and gym.

Entry requirements

You should ideally have three GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths or a relevant level 2 qualification.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed through a combination of written and oral work, presentations and practical coaching skills.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. 

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll have the opportunity to progress onto the level 3 Sport and Exercise Science.

Alternatively, you could enter the sports industry working as a small-sided team coordinator or football development officer, in youth work or even the armed forces or progress onto a level apprenticeship.
