Health and Social Care (Health Studies) Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Redbridge College

Course description

This Advanced practical and academic course is for people who wish to pursue a career in the Health Sciences and related professions including: nursing, nutrition, physiotherapy, psychology, social work and teaching. Students will complete 18 units which will be assessed though coursework, assignments based on realistic workplace situations, presentations, projects and practical work in the science laboratories. The emphasis will be on continuous assessment, rather than end-of-year examinations.

All students have to complete a mandatory work experience placement to apply the knowledge and understanding learnt in lessons and to benefit from industry experience. This will be arranged by the college. By the end of the course you’ll be ready to enter employment or progress to higher level of study at university. This qualification is equivalent to three A-Levels, and if you achieve three distinctions you will receive up to 420 UCAS points for entry to Higher Education.

  • Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
  • Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care
  • Applied Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care

Plus a range of specialist units from the following list:

  • Biology
  • Psychology
  • Social Policy
  • Sociology

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have 4 GCSEs grade A*-C (Including Maths, English & Science) or L2 Diploma in Health & Social Care or Applied Science with merit or distinction. Functional Skills L2 in maths and English are accepted as equivalent qualifications to GCSEs. You will also be required to undergo a DBS check (replacing the CRB) when enrolling on this course. Applicants must also have a good reference, interview, assessment and communication skills. Your commitment and interest in the subject will also be assessed during the interview process.


You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of staff who will pass on their years of industry knowledge and experience to you. You will be assessed through coursework covering practical sessions in the laboratory, educational visits and written work.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to further enhance your skills and knowledge by progressing on to university to study a health and social care or science-related degree or HND. Alternatively, you could enter employment straight away in the Health Services:
