ChemistryAS/A2 at Mangotsfield School
The Chemistry Specification that we follow at
Mangotsfield School is called "Salters Chemistry" and is
examined by OCR.
Salters Chemistry was first examined in 1992. In contrast
to the traditional ‘topic-based’ approach, Salters Chemistry
is ‘context-led’. Chemical concepts are introduced within a
relevant context, the modules being based on
contemporary issues. Chemical theory when introduced in
an early topic is reinforced later. The
"drip-feed" approach, combined with students seeing the
relevance of the topic, certainly helps their understanding
and enjoyment of the subject. It has undergone several
revisions, but each one, including this new scheme is a
comparatively small change from the original. It remains a
solid, informative and enjoyable course to teach and learn.
Students need to have at least 2 Bs at "Double Science"or 2 Bs at "Triple Science, chemistry included". It makesabsolutely no difference whether they have a Double orTriple Science background. The specification assumes"Double Science" and works from that. The basicqualifications, plus interest, plus commitment are theprime ingredients to a successful course.
