English Language A Level at Tyne Metropolitan College

Course description

The study of English Language is all about exploring and understanding what we write and how we speak.

You'll analyse and investigate a wide variety of texts taken from everyday sources as well as delving into the diversities of spoken and written English.

This will develop your skills for a wide variety of careers. Your studies will help you to develop a deeper understanding of the English language through the analysis of a variety of unseen texts including: leaflets, letters, posters, novel extracts, scripts, children's writing, adverts, web pages and many more.

Course content

AS - Categorising Texts and Creating Texts, including: Language and Power, Language and Gender, and Language and Technology.

A Level - Developing Language and Investigating Language, including: Language Acquisition, Language Change and Language Investigation.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Grade A* to C Including Grade B in English Language and Grade C in English Literature.


AS/A Level - 80% exam and 20% coursework.

Future opportunities

This course can lead to a wide range of Higher Education courses or careers. Study could include: English, History, Geography or Teaching.

Careers include: Teaching, Law, Journalism, Copywriting and script writing, Archaeology and a variety of roles in Media and Creative Industries.
