Sports Development, Coaching & Fitness Level 3 Extended Diploma at Furness College

Course description

Furness College now has one of the best indoor cricket arenas in the North of England, providing a ground-breaking development for the game in this area. The giant sports hall, the Match Box is also home to a range of other sports, including basketball, netball, six-a-side football, volleyball and badminton. Alongside it, the college now houses a plush new gym and fitness centre, plus changing facilities and study rooms as well as a an outdoor, state-of-the-art 3G football pitch.

Course content

The course is delivered through practical activities, visits, workshops and lab-based sessions. Units studied include: the body in action, health & safety in sport, sports coaching, fitness testing for sport and exercise, sports development, sports nutrition, exercise, health & lifestyle, sports injuries, analysing sports performance and organising sports events.

Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.

Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above (including maths and English) or other equivalent qualifications and an interest in a career in sport. You will be expected to attend an interview.


Students will be assessed in a variety of ways such as practical assessments, log books, written assignments, posters, project work, fitness testing and case studies.

Financial information

Students will be expected to dress according to the activity in line with health and safety recommendations. Students would therefore be expected to provide and wear their own suitable clothing and footwear for practical sports and fitness testing. However, more specialist equipment for less frequent activities would be provided.

Future opportunities

Students can progress on to the Foundation Degree at Furness College or other university degrees including Sports Studies, Sports Development, Sports Coaching, Leisure Centre Management and Physical Education. Our students can also progress into employment within leisure centres, gyms, or in the armed or uniformed services. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.
