Economics AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

Economics is the branch of social science that deals with the production and distribution and consumption of goods and services and their management and with the various related problems of labour, finance, taxation, etc. You don’t need to have studied the subject before to be successful. The Economics AS/A2 course consists of two units of study undertaken at AS Level in year 12 Markets in action National and Inrternational Economy And two units of study at A2 Level in year 13 The Global Economy Economics of work and leisure There is no coursework component, all the assessment is by written terminal examinations.

Entry requirements

Good written communication skills are essential. You also need to be ready to put forward arguments verbally in class. A minimum of a grade C in English is highly recommended.

Future opportunities

Economics is a highly respected subject at A-Level, that provides a useful background for a wide variety of degree choices. These include: Banking and finance, Accounting, Management Science and Law. It can also lead to many well paid careers in the city, such as International or Corporate Banking, Trading in the commodities or money markets, stock broking, as well as careers in the media, advertising, accounting, charity work, government, and business consultancy Employers particularly value economics as it develops skills in decision-making, research and analysis, and viewing problems in their national and international context. You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare foe higher education in areas of Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, Marketing or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to economics, business, marketing, finance and accounting, human resources and public relations. You could also look at doing a trainee management course within a business to gain the skills, understanding and experience that they require so you can progress to working at management level.
