Further Mathematics (MEI) Level 3 AS & A2 at Woodkirk Academy

Course description

Students at Woodkirk have the opportunity to take part in a government funded Further Mathematics initiative which allows all students who want to study the subject the access to it via a network of regional centres. Leeds University is our regional centre in the National Further Mathematics Network and provides the location and the tuition at both AS and A2 level. Lessons take place at the university on a Wednesday afternoon. There is a support system in place which uses email, websites and revision days.

At both AS and A2 level, Further Mathematics will broaden and deepen your mathematical skills and you will find it stimulating. It is an intellectual challenge which involves a combination of harder maths as well as new maths which you will not come across in GCSE or in AS/A2 Mathematics. It will help to prepare you for your university studies.

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL

If you are enthusiastic about mathematics and have enjoyed it at GCSE or know you need the subject for your career plans then there is a good chance that you will be successful in the sixth form. However, there is more to the success story that that.

There is a big difference between GCSE and AS level Mathematics. Topics are studied in greater depth and you need to be able to make vital connections between topics. The approach to algebra is more rigorous so good algebraic skills are a key to success. You need to be able to understand concepts, solve problems independently and to use the correct language and notation. You must be organised and complete all the work that your teachers set so that you have practised new skills, thoroughly understood new concepts, consolidated class work and prepared the building blocks for the next steps. Although work at AS level will appear familiar to begin with you should expect to be challenged, will need to persevere, have a good attitude, be prepared to take responsibility for your own progress and to work hard.
