Course description

Why study Maths?
As well as being satisfying in its own right, Mathematics can open the door to a wide range of careers. It is a useful tool for study in very many fields.

Mathematics in the Sixth Form can reasonably be studied with almost any combination of subjects. If you are interested in pursuing particular courses, such as Engineering or Physics, you should be seriously considering Mathematics to A Level.

Course content

During the C1 & C2 courses students will study: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration, sine and cosine, exponentials and logs, binomial expansion, and trigonometry.

During the D1 course student will study Algorithms; algorithms on graphs; the route inspection problem; critical path analysis; linear programming and matchings.

During the C3 & C4 courses students will study Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration and vectors.

During the S1 course student will study Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions and the Normal distribution.

Entry requirements

6 C grades and above plus A grade at GCSE Mathematics .


AS Level: Three 1 ½ hour examinations (33 % ) papers C1, C2 & D1.

A Level: Three 1 ½ hour examinations (33 % ) papers C3, C4 & S1.

Future opportunities

Mathematics underpins areas of academic study and business which are seen as central to the country's economic future. Mathematics skills are vital to students of the physical sciences and engineering, and increasingly important in social and medical sciences. Skilled, well-paid jobs (especially in the financial services and ICT sectors) often demand highlevel Mathematics skills. We cater for students who want to study Mathematics at university with recent girls going onto study Mathematics at UCL, Edinburgh and Bristol. We also support students including medics securing their place at University.

      At the major roundabout take the A38 exit and continue for approximately 1.5 miles. Colston’s Girls’ School is on the right-hand side of the road.
