Course content

Unit 1 - Provides an overview of the internal development of the French Revolution and its impact on major European states. The political, social and economic impact of the revolution and of the ensuing period of Napoleonic rule are main issues.

Unit 2 - Provides an opportunity to investigate the impact of Stalinist rule on the USSR during this key period of its political, economic and social development. The main emphasis will be on the impact of Stalin’s aims, actions and influence on important developments in the USSR.

Unit 3 - Promotes an understanding of change and continuity over approximately 50 years of British History, during which Britain enjoyed a period of post-war affluence and boom, followed by an era of reaction. Candidates will be able to demonstrate their understanding of significant individuals such as Thatcher, Blair, Macmillan and Wilson.

Unit 4 - A historical enquiry based on the investigation of a historical issue; specifically the Tudor Rebellions 1485-1603.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE’s grade A*-C including English and Mathematics.

It is preferred to have studied GCSE History and achieved a B grade.

Assessment

Year 1 - AS

Unit 1 - (25%) (1 hour & 15 minutes) written paper

Unit 2 - (25%) (1 hour & 30 minutes) written paper

 

Year 2 - A2 Level

Unit 3 (30%) (1 hours & 30 minutes) written paper

Unit 4 (20%) 1 Personal Historical Investigation 4000 word essay.

Future opportunities

Career prospects: Qualifications in History can lead to Law, Journalism, Politics, Business Management, Teaching, Social Welfare. History complements all subjects, particularly English, Geography, Sociology, RE, as well as more scientific courses.
