Design Technology, Product Design at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

Product Design examines a wide range of design principles and skills required to design and make high quality products using a wide range of materials. You will gain an understanding of creative and sustainability issues to satisfy the needs of a cross section of society; developing products which are fit for purpose to enhance our day to day lives.

You would benefit most from a GCE in Product Design Technology if you have already studied Resistant Materials or Graphic Products at GCSE, achieving a grade A*-C.

Product Design can lead to careers in Materials Manufacture, Product Design Degree Courses, Engineering Degree courses, management opportunities, vocational manufacturing.

Course content

Coursework is a large part of this course and there is significant use of ICT for research and presentation purposes.
Unit 1 : Portfolio of Creative Skills (90 marks) 
Consists of three practical development activities and results in the development of products supported by a design folder.
Unit 2 : Design Technology in Practice (70 marks) 
Assessed through a series of compulsory questions.
Unit 3: Designing for the Future (70 marks) 
Unit 3 will be assessed through a series of short-answer and extended questions 
Unit 4: Commercial Design (90 marks) 
A design folder supported by photographic evidence of all stages of development will be produced.

Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post 16 Centre five passes or more GCSE passes at grade C or above and a minimum of a C grade in both English Language and Mathematics.  All students will also need a B Grade GCSE in any subject they are wanting to study at A Level.  If it is a new subject for example Sociology or Psychology students must have achieved a grade B in both Mathematics and English Language. 

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Art and Design and Computing or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Design and Technology, which could lead onto higher education in areas of and design, technology, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to design and technology such as an Architect, Carpenter or Computer Technician. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
