Media Studies A Level at Great Wyrley Performing Arts High School

Course description

The course is split into 3 components. Students must complete all 3 components to complete the course requirements. Component 1 (Media Products) is worth 65 marks, 32.5% of total A Level. Component 2 (Media in a Digital Age) is worth 75 marks, 37.5% of total A Level. Component 3 (Making Media) is worth 60 marks, 30% of total A Level.

Component 1 – Media Products
Students will explore how media products are used by institutions to construct different representations and how media audiences interpret these products. They will use aspects of the theoretical framework to analyse advertising and marketing campaigns, both a professionally produced campaign and the campaign created by the learner in the unexamined assessment component 3.

Component 2 – Media in a Digital Age
Students will explore and analyse the contemporary media landscape through the study of media industries from contemporary and historical perspectives, evolving media forms and global media.

Component 3 – Making Media Students will practically explore the creation of three linked media products in an advertising and marketing campaign that will be a cross-media production.

Future opportunities

This qualification gives learners transferable and higher-order skills that are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, communication, analytical and teamwork skills, as well as personal practical production skills learners need to progress to higher education, employment, self-employment or training. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses, if it is taken alongside other qualifications as part of a two-year programme of learning, and it combines well with a large number of subjects. It will support entry to higher education courses in a wide range of disciplines, depending on the subjects taken alongside it. For learners who wish to study an aspect of Media in higher education, opportunities include:

- BA (Hons) in Media and Communication Studies.
- BA (Hons) in Journalism.
- BA (Hons) in Film and Television Studies.
- BA (Hons) in Digital Media
