Statistics A level at Luton Sixth Form College

Course description

Statistics appears in almost all areas of science, technology, research, and wherever data is obtained for the purpose of finding information. Statistics has been described as the science of making conclusions in the presence of uncertainity. It is principally concerned with the collection, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data in order to ‘make sense’ of the world around us. It is important in many areas to help make decisions about the future, for example in determining the effectiveness of new medicines in the pharmaceutical industry, the shaping of public policy in government, the planning of market strategy in business, or the management of investment portfolios in finance.

Course content

This course may appeal to students who wish to continue studying a numerate subject without any great need to deal with the greater algebraic content of a Mathematics course. The emphasis is on using and applying statistics. You will study various techniques and theories used in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data and you will meet procedures for determining how to judge the reliability of any predictions made. The course is designed to give an understanding of the calculation of statistical measures and their use in decision making. This course will be particularly useful to students who are also studying subjects such as Biology, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Psychology and Sociology, in which statistical methods play a part.
