General Studies A Level at Wolverhampton Girls' High School
General Studies allows students to broaden their education by reinforcing and enhancing the subjects studied up to GCSE and being followed at AS/A level. It encourages thinking across specialist subjects including units on Culture and Society and Science and Society in years 12 and 13.
Progression to Career/ University Courses:
Many universities accept General Studies as a full A Level and it has enabled students in previous years to access a wide range of courses.
We are following AQA specification A:
At AS the specification builds upon a base of knowledge acquired through studying a broad range of subjects at GCSE. Students discuss the nature of knowledge, truth and belief; analyse data, information, ideas, opinions and argument; examine questions, form values, make judgements and draw conclusions.
At A2, students further develop themes and concepts studied at AS. They are expected to make informed judgements and reach justified conclusions. Students also need to demonstrate understanding of how values can influence judgements.
Students (external and internal) wishing to join the Sixth Form at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School will usually be expected to have achieved a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A*- B, including Mathematics and English Language with a minimum average points score of 48 from her best 6 subjects. Students should preferably have achieved A* or A in the subjects they wish to study at A Level, but with a minimum of grade B. Subjects which are not GCSEs but deemed to be equivalent to GCSEs are not accepted. The Headteacher reserves the right to make the final decision on the application of this criteria.
