First Diploma in Applied Science (equivalent to 4 GCSE’s graded A*- C) at Didcot Sixth Form College

Course description

Unit 1 Scientific Principles cover a number of key concepts in biology, chemistry and physics.

Unit 2 Science and the World of Work. Designed to provide knowledge and understanding at an introductory level of the work environment for a variety of science-based occupations.

Unit 5 Biological Systems. Will enable learners to develop their biology practical skills, underpinning knowledge and understanding of biology, to include applications in the workplace and the effects on the environment and society.

Unit 9 Plants and Food. Explores the relationship between the structure and function of plants, their types of cells, how they store food and their relationship to the environment and country where they are grown.

Unit 10 Forensic Science Applications. Introduces and develops the skills, understanding and knowledge of scientific processes and their application to forensic science and the criminalinvestigation.

Unit 11 Science in Medicine. In this unit the learners’ knowledge and understanding, and where practicable, the learner’s skills are developed to engage in the ‘detective work’ aspect ofdiagnosing problems which occur in human body systems.

Entry requirements

Level 2 BTEC courses are available to students who do not attain 5 C grades at GCSE. Studentsstudying these courses may progress onto Level 3 courses but will need to achieve a minimum of aMerit (grade B) at Level 2.
