Biology A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

The study of Biology aims to develop your interest in, and enthusiasm for the subject including developing an interest in further study and careers in Biology. The course is designed to:

  • understand and demonstrate, through application, and provide a deeper knowledge of the skills required to investigate biological scientific concepts;
  • develop data handling skills and the ability to analyse and evaluate scientific data;
  • develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Biology and how they relate to each other and a range of other disciplines;
  • develop an appreciation of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how sciences contribute to the success of the economy, society and the well being of the individual.

Course content

There are 6 modules to the A level course as follows:

Module 1: Development of practical skills
Module 2: Foundations in Biology
Module 3: Exchange and transport
Module 4: Biodiversity, evolution and disease
Module 5: Communication, homeostasis and energy
Module 6: Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent) including Grade B in Science, Additional Science and Mathematics. Experience shows that your chances of success are greater in this subject if you have a Grade B in English.


Paper 1: 2 hour 15 mins, 37% weighting assessing elements from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Paper 2: 2 hour 15 mins, 37% weighting assessing elements from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6.
Paper 3: 1 hour 30 mins, 26% weighting assessing elements from modules 1 to 6.
There is also a pass/fail practical endorsement element for the A level. It does not impact on the overall grade awarded.
