Btec Level 3 Nationals Increative Media Production at Downend School

Course description

If you have a very visual, creative imagination and good organisational skills with a desire to create your own Media texts, then this is the course for you. You will be working independently and as part of a team, completing real research and investigations. You will be developing your own productions, meeting strict deadlines. You will develop skills such as camera operation, interview and presentation techniques as well as learning the theory and practice of digital editing. Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate leading to (in Year 13) BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma. Students take seven units over two years.

Y12

In Year 12 students study for the Level 3 Certificate in Creative Media Production, broadly equivalent to one GCE AS Level. It is a course designed for students who excel in practical applications in Media.

Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries: This unit will develop understanding of and skills in pre-production.

Communication Skills for Creative Media Production: The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners are able to communicate effectively in creative media production contexts in writing and orally.

Film Studies: This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of how films are created for specific audiences and how they make meaning for those audiences.

Advertisement Production for Television: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to apply production skills to create an advert for television. Learners will examine existing television advertisements to investigate how persuasive messages can be constructed.

Y13

In Year 13, students ‘top up’ their studies, completing a further three units, to gain the BTEC National Award Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma; this is broadly equivalent to one GCE A’ Level. Units of study will include: Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries, Music Video Production and Designing Idents for Television.

Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries: The aim of this unit is to develop understanding of and skills in research relevant to creative media production. Learners will present their findings in both written and oral forms and will learn how to cite and reference their sources.

Designing Idents for Television: The aim of this unit is to develop understanding of and skills in the design and production of onscreen graphics and idents for television using the appropriate technologies of image manipulation and production.

Music Video Production: In this unit learners will explore the purpose, styles and conventions of music video. They will then develop, plan and produce a music video.

The course will be taught through a mixture of theoretical and practical work. Students will produce individual pieces of work but there will be opportunities to work as part of a group.
