Law AS Level at Grantham College

Course description

A robust legal system is the foundation of a fair society. If you feel strongly about concepts like justice and equality then this course could be very rewarding for you. You might see youself as a barrister, a solicitor, legal executive or legal secretary. Alternatively you might want to choose law because it is a fascinating course which will help you develop transferable skills such as analysis and problem solving. Whatever your vision, Law is a valuable first step in achieving your ambition.

Course content

Law Making & Legal Systems Unit 1: magistrates & juries, alternative dispute resolution, delegated legislation & statutory interpretation. Concepts of Liability Unit 2: elements of a crime, strict liability, non fatal offences against the person, sentencing, criminal procedure, negligence, damages & civil procedure.

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge of the subject is required, but applicants preferably should have GCSE English Grade B or above.


Two exams in May & June. The first is 1.5 hours long & you have to answer 3 questions. The 2nd exam is 1.5 hours long & you have to answer 12 questions. There is no coursework involved in this subject.

Financial information

Full Time Further Education courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.  Exam resit fees may apply if and when applicable.

Future opportunities

After completing this module you will be able to progress onto A2 Law which would enable you to become a solicitor, barrister, legal executive or become a higher apprentice in law. Alternatively it will enable you to progress onto most degree courses because of the analytical and transferable skills you obtain through its completion.
