Health and Social Care BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate at Burnley College

Course description

This level 2 course prepares you for a wide range of exciting health and social care careers. The course is designed to develop both your care value base whilst in college and your practical skills whilst on a vocational care placement.

The course consists of 2 externally set exam units: Human Lifespan Development and Healthy Living. The remaining 8 units are assessed through continuous assignment work to build a final portfolio of work.

Assignment based subjects covered include:

• Health and Social Care Values
• Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
• Social Influences on Health and Wellbeing
• Promoting Health and Wellbeing
• The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing
• Equality and Diversity in Health and Social Care
• Human Body Systems and the Care of Disorders
• Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care

Your programme of study will also include a GCSE in English and/or Maths if you do not hold these on entry to the course.

Throughout the course students will utilise a range of teaching environments from vocational themed classrooms to the dedicated training Iris Dementia Suite. These facilities will enable you to apply theory to practise and prepare you for work placement and future employment.

Entry requirements

A minimum of two GCSEs at grade C or above, in addition to GCSE English Language at grade D or above OR a relevant Level 1 Diploma and GCSE grade D in English Language. This course is subject to a clear enhanced DBS check.


Assessment is via coursework with two modules assessed by examination.

Future opportunities

BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, a BTEC Nursing Cadet Scheme or An Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care.
