Art: Fine Art Edexel A level at Kantor King Solomon High School

Course description

Fine art requires engagement with aesthetic and intellectual concepts through the use of traditional and/or digital media, materials, techniques and processes for the purpose of self-expression, free of external constraints. Fine art may be created to communicate ideas and messages about the observed world, the qualities of materials, perceptions, or preconceptions. It can also be used to explore personal and cultural identity, society and how we live, visual language, and technology. Fine Art allows us to consider and reflect on our place in the world, both as individuals and collectively.

Course content

Component 1:

  • Component 1 incorporates two linked elements: Part 1: practical work and Part 2: personal study. The investigation and development for both the practical work and personal study will be shown through supporting studies
  • Students will have opportunities to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary, secondary and contextual sources. They will experiment with media and processes, and develop and refine their ideas, presenting their outcomes.

Component 2:

  • Component 2 represents the culmination of the A level course.
  • Encouraging student independence in the development of ideas, intentions and response(s).


Entry requirements

Minimum of 6 GCSE grades at A*-C including English and Mathematics with a grade B or above in the subjects to be studied at A level.


Component 1 Personal Investigation (60%)

Part 1: practical work (72 marks) 

  • From personal starting points
  • Students submit:

             - supporting studies

             - personal outcome(s) 

Part 2: personal study (18 marks)

  • Students submit a piece of continuous prose of a minimum of 1000 words

Total marks available: 90


Component 2 Externally Set Assignment (40%)

  • Externally-set, broad-based theme released to teachers and students on 1 February.
  • Sustained focus period of 15 hours of controlled assessment in which students create final response(s) to the theme.
  • Students submit:

             - preparatory studies

             - personal outcome(s)

Total marks available: 72

Future opportunities

Develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required for students who want to progress to foundation courses or undergraduate degrees.

AS and A level: key points

AS and A level have been ‘decoupled’, which means that AS marks or grades do not count towards the full A level.

Students can still take AS exams at the end of Year 12 – but if they go on to do a full A level course, they will have to create a completely new Personal Investigation. This is because any work submitted for their AS Personal Investigation cannot be submitted for A level.

We are lucky to have a brand new sixth form centre where there is both a canteen area with a coffee shop and also a quiet, supervised study area.

      The Sixth Form is integrated into the life of the whole school community and Sixth Formers are expected to act as role models towards younger students. Our aim is to produce well-balanced, responsible young adults fully prepared to take their place in Higher Education, the professions and the Jewish Community.
