*Science GCSE at The Westwood Academy (West Coventry Sixth Form)
Year 10 Science (Core) - 1 GCSE
Year 11 Additional Science (1 GCSE) OR Additional Applied Science (1 GCSE)
Pupils will study Science Core (1 GCSE) comprising 6 modules:
- Human Biology
- Evolution & Environment
- Products from rocks
- Energy & Electricity
- Oils, Earth & Atmosphere
- Radiation & the Universe
1. The 6 modules will each be assessed as 30 minute objective tests (75%), with two taken in November, March and June respectively.
2. Practical Skills assessment (25%)
a) One practical investigation carried out in a normal lesson time to collect data.
b) Investigative skills assessment - 45 minute test set by AQA using candidates own data. Followed by further questions related to provided data.
In Year 11 most pupils will undertake either Additional Science or Additional Applied Science. Pupils considering studying Science at AS level will follow the Additional course. This course has an emphasis on explaining, theorising and modelling in Science. Assessment is by 3x45 minute papers of structured questions and a practical assessment as in the Core Science.
The Additional Applied Science emphasises procedural and technical knowledge of science practice. It is set in 3 vocational contexts: sports science, food science and forensic science. The assessment structure is 60% coursework and 40% on examined content.
This will be offered to a small group of pupils. They will complete aspects of the course in curriculum time and in sessions after school.
