A Level Computing at Theale Green School

Course description

This course is aimed at those who have an interest in computers and computing and wish to enhance their understanding of the workings and uses of computers. The course covers the fundamentals of computer programming as well as problem solving techniques using computers.

Unit 1 – students learn the stages of problem solving, how to work with algorithms, programming in Visual Basic, the binary number system, information coding systems and the stages of development of a hardware/software system.

Unit 2 – will cover logic gates and Boolean algebra, internet components of a computer, hardware devices, the structure of the internet, networking protocols and the consequences of the uses of computing.

Unit 3 – covers algorithms and data structures for problem solving, programming paradigms, the role of an operating system, database design, communication and networking, security and integrity of data in a database.

Unit 4 – will focus on the need for a computer-based solution to a real problem, document a design that meets the requirements of a real problem in terms of hardware and software, document the analysis, design, construction, testing, training and maintenance of a programmed solution

Entry requirements

Students will need to have a B grade inMathematics, as well as a proven work ethic.
