Childrens Care Learning and Development Diploma Level 2 at West Suffolk College

Course description

This course will provide the knowledge and practical training for those wishing to gain an initial qualification in childcare learning and education. Students who successfully pass all the requirements of the course will gain assistant practitioner status in a supervised capacity within an early years environment.

The course includes work placements in child care settings such as nurseries and schools. Students have to accrue 300 hours in work placement during the year.


Course content

Core Units: Understanding Children's Development; Keeping Children Safe; Communication with Children and Adults; Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Childcare; Professional Development, Roles and Responsibilities in Childcare. Specialist Units: Supporting Children's Play and Learning. Students will also take Functional Skills in Application of Number and Communication at a level appropriate for their course, and wider key skills.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.


Entry requirements

* At least 3 GCSE's at Grade D PLUS English GCSE or Maths GCSE at Grade C or above,

* A positive attitude to working with children,

In addition all students will require:

* Satisfactory DBS check,

* Satisfactory childcare reference,

* Satisfactory academic reference,

Students will complete a pre-entry task at interview.



The College offers a wide menu of Level 2 Diplomas. We will work with all students in their first 6 weeks at College to place them on the appropriate Diploma programme that best meets their individual needs and best ensures their success. Within this course students will have the opportunity to take either EdExcel Level 2 Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development or EdExcel Level 2 Extended Certificate in Children's Care, Learning and Development.


Future opportunities

Students can apply to progress to a Level 3 course i.e: Level 3 National in Children's Play, Learning & Development, or NVQ3 in Children's Care Learning & Development, or depending on their overall achievement in placements, written work, exam achievement at distinction level and suitable childcare and academic references, employment within the childcare sector in a supervised capacity.

To progress onto the full time level 3, students must have achieved GCSE Maths or English whilst studying Level 2. (Of the students who completed this course last year 77% continued with Further Education while 23% secured employment).
