Maintenance Operations Intermediate Apprenticeship at Truro and Penwith College

Course description

This is a work-based learning qualification that enables you to work as a maintenance operative in the construction industry. As a maintenance operative, you will carry out general repairs and maintenance to brickwork, paint, plaster, woodwork and other elements of existing buildings. You will perform tasks associated with a wide variety of different trades, rather than specialising in just one area. Within the Building Maintenance Multi-trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations level 2 NVQ/Diploma you will be taught in our first-class workshops, and also study how the construction industry operates in a maintenance capacity in our well-equipped classrooms and computer suites. If you enjoy doing practical things and you are interested in general construction and maintenance, this could be the perfect course and career for you.

Course content

You will be taught through a blended learning approach incorporating taught sessions, workplace learning, assessments and online learning. One-to one support, tuition and advice are available from our team of experienced and qualified tutors, assessors and training advisors.

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction.
  • Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication.
  • Small-Scale Building Repairs.
  • Small-Scale Painting and Decorating Repairs.
  • Small-Scale Plastering Repairs.
  • Small-Scale Plumbing Repairs.
  • Carpentry Repairs.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Applicants must be employed in the Maintenance Operations industry as an apprentice and attend a successful interview. A keen interest in the subject is also required.

Future opportunities

This qualification prepares you for work in the construction industry, with a specific focus on maintenance operations. Upon completion you can apply to CSCS, or other industry card schemes, to gain a skills card that will enable you to work on site in your chosen trade. If you wish to progress to become a supervisor working on site, you may wish to study any of the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction)
  • Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision (Construction)
