A2 Art at South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy

Course description

The work involes observation, recording with materials, researching the work of artists and the production of a final piece. The sketchbook and the camera are all used constantly.

Themes like Food, and the Seven Deadly Sins are used as inspiration. Students are given the opportunity to visit galeries and locations of interest that link to their project theme.

Course content

UNIT 1: Portfolio: A section of thoughtfully presented work that demonstrates the breadth and depth of the course of study. At least one extended collection of work, or project, based on an idea, concept, theme or issue which demonstrates the candidate's ability to sustain work from an initial starting point to a realisation and includes evidence of their ability to research, develop ideas and link their work in a meaningful way to related critical/contetual materials.

UNIT 2: Externally set task: The emphasis of this unit will be the development of ideas. This unit will consist of a choice of five questions set by the exam board to be used as starting points. Candidates are required to select one.

Entry requirements

5A* - C grades including English.

A GCSE grade of at least B is required, although enthusiasm is a real essential.


For AS: 50% is practical coursework, 50% is a set question with a 5 hour timed test.

For A2: 50% is coursework involving an illustrated essay combined with practical assignments and 50% is a set question with a 15 hour timed test.

AS course is worth 50% of the final A2 grade.

Future opportunities

Besides obvious areas like Architecture, Graphic Design, Fashion, Textiles, Jewellers and Designers, the A Level Art course provides stdents with life skills and creative approaches which are much valued by employers in many fields.
