Course description

GENERAL AIMS: This course aims to develop students’

performance and composition skills together with an

understanding and application of the Music Industry.

Students compose and perform, using instruments used

in the music industry (or traditional instruments in some

cases), while developing their knowledge of musical

conventions, styles and techniques within the industry

and using them effectively. They will gain practical

experience of music technology, its uses and capabilities.

Students are required to be able to:

n Play an instrument at GCSE standard.*

n Read music notations.

n Understand music theory at GCSE Level **

* This is usually at Grade IV or V of ABRSM/ rockschool

examinations. NB: Grades need not to have been taken;

however students must be able to play at an acceptable level

and an audition may be required for those joining the 6th

form and those who have not completed a GCSE level course.

** This will include; Key signatures, chords, bass and treble

clef and a good understanding of the elements of music.

COURSE OUTLINE: Students can opt for a choice

of 1, 2 or 3 A Level equivalents, each requiring the

completion of coursework that, depending on its

content, is worth a certain number of credits - 5, 10

or 15. The course is project based, and within each

project students will complete various assignments

of a practical and theoretical nature. Within each

of category are 86 units, each with a compulsory

aspect, Music Arrangement, Composition, Practical

Harmony Application, The Music Industry, Performance,

Musical History / Context and Music Technology.

NATURE OF STUDY: As well as lessons, in which there

will be a combination of teacher directed information,

presentations, individual practice and ensemble

work, candidates will be expected to show increasing

independence in their study skills. The majority of their

work will be split between rehearsal, research and

individual creative projects. Students are expected to

keep an evaluative, analytical diary giving evidence of

their processes and progress through each unit.

Students are expected to be competent musicians,
