Course description

Why choose Financial Studies?
This is an ideal course for you if you are keen to pursue a career in financial services, business finance or personal finance after the Sixth Form, either through an employment route (eg advanced apprenticeship) or by studying for a finance or business-related degree at university.

This new and exciting course has been introduced to give students wishing to pursue a career in the rapidly growing financial industries an opportunity to learn more about the industry from a younger age. It is run in conjunction with the prestigious Institute of Financial Services, and you will study towards the Certificate in Financial Studies in your first year and the Diploma in Financial Studies in your second. The Certificate is equivalent to an AS Level and the Diploma to an A Level. Both qualifications carry the equivalent amount of UCAS points and are accepted by a large number of universities. You will also have the opportunity to attend business related visits and student conferences, as well as join the Career Academy.

Through the course you will develop the following key skills:

  • Analyse financial data and information, financial services products and services and make judgements about suitability for people in different circumstances
  • Understand the concept of financial sustainability and ethics
  • Demonstrate numeracy skills including the ability to manipulate financial and other numerical data
  • Use appropriate data and information to make arguments
  • Structure and communicate ideas logically and coherently
  • Learn independently

Who are the IFS?
Founded in 1879 as the Chartered Institute of Bankers, the Institute of Financial Services has been educating financial services professionals for over 130 years and have an unrivalled reputation within the banking and financial services industry for producing students of the highest calibre, with detailed understanding of the industry and the practical skills to apply that knowledge in the workplace. Previous IFS students are employed by every major banking and financial institution in the UK and can be found in senior positions right across the industry.

What will I study?
Year 12 - Certificate in Financial Studies:
Unit 1 - Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term
Unit 2 - Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term

Year 13 - Diploma in Financial Services:
Unit 3 - Sustainability of an Individual’s Finance
Unit 4 - Sustainability of the Financial Service System

What can I study it with?
The course can be studied alongside any other subject offered in the Sixth Form, but goes particularly well with Business, Economics, Law and Mathematics.

Career opportunities
There is a shortage of young people with the necessary skills for the financial industries and this course has been developed by leading financial companies to enable more young people to develop the specific knowledge, skills and experience needed by firms in the financial industries. Long-term employment andearning prospects are strong.

The course provides firm foundations for employment within the accounting, business, finance and banking sectors after the Sixth Form or for undergraduate study within finance and business related disciplines. You may also decide to continue studying with the IFS on one of their undergraduate degree programmes such as BSc (Hons) in Banking Practice and Management, BSc (Hons) in Finance and Accounting for Financial Services and BSc (Hons) in Finance, Investment and Risk.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE grades A*- C including:

Grade C in English Language and Grade C in Mathematics. It is not necessary to have studied the subject previously.
