Children's Care, Play, Learning & Development Level 1 Diploma at Somerset College

Course description

As part of this course you will study a range of subjects within the field of Children’s Care. Students will be taught and study towards core units in the following areas:

  • Communication Skills
  • Development
  • Healthy Eating
  • Keeping Safe
  • Learning Experiences
  • Physical Experiences
  • Creative Activities
  • Project
  • Books, Poems and Stories
  • Working in a Team
  • English and Maths
  • Forest School

Entry requirements

  • Three GCSEs at grade E or above including English.
  • Students must be aged between 16 and 19.
  • A DBS Check is required.
  • Evidence of vocational experience.
  • Successful selection at interview is necessary.


Assessment is through assignment work, role play, individual and group presentations and projects. Practical assignments will also be set. You will be taught using a range of teaching styles supported by excellent IT and learning resources, and have opportunities to go on trips.

Future opportunities

You could stay on at Somerset College and progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development or Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care.

You could find employment in the Early Years sectors.
