English Language A Level at Kendal College
A-Level English Language explores the study of English Language both as a medium of communication and as a topic in its own right, with an emphasis on the opportunity for students to pursue lines of enquiry, analyse texts produced by others and debate different views.
The course covers a variety of topics including how the language has changed and developed over time and how language can be used and manipulated for various effects, both on an individual level and also on a societal level.
You will complete the AS-Level in the first year and the A2 in the second to form a full A-level.
The course gives students the opportunity to develop independent approaches, and to undertake paired and group work. This develops critical understanding in analysing the ways in which language changes and develops on both an individual and global scale.
Your course will explore the below topics which form your assessment:
Exam Paper 1: Language, the Individual and Society Textual Variations and Representations Children’s language development (0-11 years) Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities
Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, 40% of A Level
Exam Paper 2: Language Diversity and Change Language diversity and change Language discourses Writing Skills Methods of language analysis are integrated into the activities
Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes , 100 marks, 40% of A-level
Coursework: A personal investigation that explores a specific technique or concept in language analysis (3,500 words)
Assessed by teachers, Moderated by AQA, 50 marks, 20% of A-level
5 GCSE’s A*-C including grade B or above in GCSE English Language.
The course is assessed by two examinations at the end of the year and a piece of independent study in the form of the course work.
English Language will give you a wide range of job prospects including advertising, human resources, journalism, law, publishing, management, teaching amongst others.
