German AS level at Malmesbury School

Course description

AS German builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society.  You will study how German-speaking society has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. The course explores German-speaking artistic culture, including art and architecture, and the influence of the past on present-day German-speaking communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of German-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study a text or a film.

Course content

Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing

  • Aspects of German-speaking society
  • Artistic culture in the German-speaking world
  • Grammar

Paper 2: Writing

  • One text or one film from the lists in the specification
  • Grammar

Paper 3: Speaking

  • One sub-theme from Aspects of German-speaking society and one sub-theme from Artistic culture in the German-speaking world.

 

 

Assessment

Paper 1:

  • Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • 80 marks
  • 40% of AS

Paper 2:

  • Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • 60 marks
  • 30% of AS

Paper 3:

  • Oral exam: 12–14 minutes
  • 60 marks
  • 30% of AS
