Mathematics AS & A2 at Bishop Ramsey C of E School
Mathematics is a course which is challenging and interesting. It serves as a useful support to many other qualifications as well as being a sought after qualification for the workplace and courses in Higher Education.
The courses are linear and the A/S and A level courses are distinct qualifications. The subject content is divided into three areas: Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. The Overarching Themes must be applied along with associated mathematical thinking and understanding, across the whole of the subject content. The material at A level will include topic areas covered at A/S level in greater depth as well as additional topics which are only covered at A level. The areas covered only at A level are indicated by bold lettering.
- Pure Mathematics : Proof, Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry; sequences and series; Trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration, vectors, numerical methods.
- Mechanics: Quantities and units in Mechanics; kinematics; Forces and Newton's laws; Moments.
- Statistics : Statistical Sampling; data presentation & interpretation; probability; statistical distributions, statistical hypothesis testing.
Entry requirements: The minimum requirement for entry is Grade 7 at GCSE Mathematics.
The A/S examinations in Mathematics will comprise a Pure paper and an applications paper covering Statistics and Mechanics whilst the A2 papers will again be split between Pure Mathematics and an applications paper. The A2 examinations level will include topic areas covered at A/S Level in greater depth as well as additional topics which are only covered at A Level
University subjects (e.g. Mathematics, Science and Economics) and many career paths are facilitated with an A Level qualification in Mathematics.
