Japanese AS/A2 at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)

Course description

There will be a huge variety of opportunities open to you if you are successful in your AS or A Level. A language can complement many courses on offer at university. A recent survey showed that employees who have language skills are often paid an enhanced salary by up to 15%. Studying languages develops your communication and presentation skills. Learning a foreign language also helps develop your team-work, creative and problem-solving skills which are crucial in the workplace and sought-after by employers. You will be offered the opportunity to take part in an exchange with Japan.

Course content

The AS component builds on grammar and vocabulary studied in GCSE. You will also cover topics such as: • Youth Culture and Concerns • Lifestyle: Health and Fitness • The world around us • Education and Employment In the full A level, you will go on to read a Japanese short story and study a region of Japan in detail. You will develop essay writing skills to prepare you for the final exam.

Entry requirements

You should have at least a GCSE Grade B in Japanese


Year 12: one reading and writing paper (2 hours 45 minutes) Year 13: one reading and writing paper (3 hours)

Future opportunities

Students who took their A level in Japanese last year went on to study a wide range of subjects. Some choose to study Japanese at university, The most common route is studying a combined degree with subjects such as Economics, Business etc. One of our students was accepted to read Japanese at Oxford.

Further information

You will need a good dictionary. It is important to have access to the internet, word processing and presentation software including loudspeakers at home. In lessons, you will have the opportunity to debate and discuss issues, to read magazines and newspapers, to use the Internet and use computer software. There will also be online homework and exercises on our online learning platform. Through reading and writing, you will become more accurate and fluent.
