Geography (AS and A Level) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

At AS, all candidates will study Core Human and Physical Geography. They will also develop a variety of geographical skills through fieldwork visits and experiences.

Course content


Unit 1 Physical and Human Geography

  •   Rivers, floods and management.
  •   Population change.
  •   Energy Issues.
  •   Cold Environments.

    Unit 2 Geographical skills

 Geographical Skills – Investigative, Cartographic, Graphical, ICT and


Unit 3 Contemporary Geographical Issues

  •   Plate tectonics and associated hazards.
  •   Worlds cities.
  •   Development and globalisation.
  •   Weather and Climate.

    Unit 4A Geography Fieldwork Investigation

- Candidates analyse and evaluate their fieldwork in response to the

questions set. In addition, candidates will be assessed on fieldwork skills.

Structured short and extended questions
70% of total AS marks 35% of total A-level marks.

Structured skills and generic fieldwork questions
30% of the total AS marks 15% of total A-level marks.

Structured short and extended questions and an essay. 30 % of the total A-level marks.

Structured short and extended questions based on Candidates own fieldwork investigation.
20% of total A-level marks.

Future opportunities

Geography is a respected A Level and will be welcomed both for employment and higher education. Geographers seem particularly well suited to commercial employment because they possess the abilities and skills that employers look for. This partly derives from the subject being a combination of the Arts and the Sciences.
