Health and Social Care - Double Award A Level at St Joseph's Catholic Academy

Course description

This A level course in Health and Social Care is worth two A levels. The additional units covered will allow students to gain a deeper insight into the sector. This A level would complement a number of other A level subjects including Food Technology, Biology, Psychology and Sports Studies. Aspects of each of these subjects are covered as part of the A level H&SC programme.

Course content

AS LEVEL In addition to the two units described for AS Health and Social Care Single Award students will also complete:

Unit 3 – Life as a Challenge (Written Paper) This unit explores a range of challenges faced by people due to physical disability, learning disability, mental health issues and social circumstances.

Unit 4 – Educating Children and Young People (Portfolio) This unit introduces students to the theory and practice of learning in education.

A2 LEVEL In addition to the two units described for A2 Health and Social Care Single Award students will also complete:

Unit 7 – Food and Fitness (Written Paper)* This unit aims to develop knowledge and understanding of food components and balanced diets and a range of different aspects of exercise which help to maintain the health of individuals.

Unit 9 – Understanding Mental Disorders (Portfolio)* This unit introduces students to a range of mental disorders, their causes, treatments and the impact of these on individuals and on their families, friends and carers.

Entry requirements

Grade C in English at GCSE.

Future opportunities

This is an ideal course for students who would like to work in one of the Health, Social Care, Children and Young People or Justice Sectors. This could lead to working in a wide range of care settings including hospitals, nursing homes, elderly residential homes, schools, nurseries and prisons. Students may wish to further their studies by progressing on to a degree course.

Previous students have enrolled on a wide range of courses including Midwifery, Nursing, Primary Education, Early Year’s studies and Health Care studies.
