Product Design A Level at Oldbury Wells School

Course description

We use the AQA exam board and the course consists of:

• Core technical principles

• Core designing and making principles

• Additional specialist knowledge

This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning into practice by producing products of their choice. Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

Entry requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements: GCSE Grade C in Design Resistant Materials, Design Textiles or Art and Design GCSE Level 4 in Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Product Design leads to a range of exciting and versatile careers and prepares students for the specialist areas of:

Product Design— Three Dimensional Design, Furniture, Industrial Design, Interior Design

Engineering— for this route a combination of Maths and Physics might be required. 

In addition to going onto focused design careers, by completing a Design Technology A Level you are developing your creative thinking manufacturing knowledge and an understanding of consumer needs which are very appealing skills to have in a number of careers. The course prepares students to continue into further education either onto specialist degrees, HND or Foundation Art and Design courses as well as renowned design universities and colleges.
