Applied Science BTEC Level 2 First Diploma at Bishop Douglass School

Course description

The BTEC first Diploma in Applied Science to acquaint learners with the specific vocational skills, understanding and knowledge required to enter employment within the science industry or organisations that use Science.

The course is designed to enable you to study other subjects alongside your BTEC First Diploma. The structure of the course gives you a broad foundation as well allowing you to focus on your interests, and choose new areas to explore, such as environmental science, forensic science applications or anatomy and physiology.

Course content

The course consists of three core units:

  • Unit 5 Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Unit 6 Applications of Physical Science
  • Unit 7 Health Applications of Life Science

Plus an externally marked examination unit

  • Unit 8 Scientific Skills

Entry requirements

You should have the interest and potential to succeed in achieving the qualification and ideally be able to show you have a standard of literacy, numeracy and general education equivalent to four GCSEs graded D-G.

Future opportunities

If you achieve an overall pass grade or better in the BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science, it is possible for you to progress further by enrolling on another Level 2 programme, such as a relevant NVQ, or to move on to a higher level qualification such as a Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science.
