Business Studies AS and A Level at Park House School
Business Studies will give you an understanding of the problems and decisions facing business people in the real world, as well as the development of the study skills required for higher education. Business Studies is also good preparation for employment/vocational study post-18. Through the activities carried out in class and outside, students will also gain literacy, numeracy, presentational and teamworking skills. Other subjects that combine well with Business Studies include Computing, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Geography and Modern Languages.
AS Course Summary
Unit 1 Planning and Financing a Business
40% of AS / 20% of A Level
AS units focus on small to medium-sized businesses; this unit covers the issues involved in a business start-up such as research and planning, as well a the factors that determine success.
Unit 2 Managing a Business
60% of AS / 30% of A Level
This unit focuses on how established businesses might improve their effectiveness. Topics covered include finance, people in business, operations management, marketing and the competitive environment.
A2 Course Summary
Strategies for Success
25% of A Level
A2 units build on the AS units by considering more complex business scenarios and focusing on strategy as opposed to tactics. In this unit you will learn about larger businesses trading in international markets and how their performance might be measured.
Unit 4 The Business Environment and
25% of A Level
This is a synoptic unit and considers the relationship between businesses and external factors. Students will study a number of themes which are important in the strategic management of businesses, for example, leadership and corporate culture.
There is no requirement to have studied Business Studies at GCSE Level. Grade C or above in both Mathematics and English is required.
