English Literature A Level at Weston College

Course description

You will explore and enjoy a wide range of prose, drama and poetry from Shakespeare to contemporary literature. In the first year you will focus on the ways narratives and stories are told in different texts, while the second year will allow you to direct your own independent research as well as focus on a genre study.

Group discussions form a large part of this A Level – we will expect you to read widely and independently and be prepared to discuss your reading with others.

Course content

You will study:

  • Poetry
  • Prose
  • Shakespeare and other drama
  • Literary theory.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs at grade A*-C, including English Language and English Literature. You cannot study this subject as well as the English Language and Literature A Level.


You will be assessed through exams (80%) and coursework (20%).

Future opportunities

  • A degree at university in English literature or a related area
  • The analytical skills you develop in English literature are useful in other employment areas including: law, politics, business, advertising, media and teaching.
