Geography AS/A Level at Boston High School

Course description

The aim of the Edexcel course is to prepare students for further  study in areas of Geography, Environmental Sciences, Business, Economics and Agriculture.  

The aim of the course is to fully teach the skills needed to succeed in higher education courses such as research, essay writing and thinking synoptically.

Course content

Year 1‐ Physical: Tectonic Processes and Hazards (compulsory), Coastal Landscapes and Change (optional unit chosen)              

 Human: Globalisation (compulsory) and Diverse Places (optional)

Year 2‐ Physical: The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity and The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security (compulsory)              

 Human: Superpowers and Global Development and connections (compulsory)

Entry requirements

- C  atGCSEGeography

- 5  in EnglishGCSE

- 5 in  GCSE Mathematics


There are 3 examinations at the end of Year 2 with an equal split between Physical and Human Geography.  The third exam is a synoptic examination which draws all of the geographical topics together based on key strands which we learn throughout the 2 year course.  Exams account for 80% of the overall grade.  Additionally, 20% of the final grade comes from an independent research investigation which is highly structured in an area which interests the student.   There is a minimum expectation of 4 days fieldwork at  A‐Level which will be undertaken at the end of Year 1.
