Drama & Theatre Studies AS & A Level at Queen Elizabeth's School

Course description

Anyone who has an interest in drama and the theatre will find this course has something for them.

The specification we follow (Edexcel) is designed to provide a balance across a range of learning activities. This specification combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all of these elements.

Students completing the course successfully will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.

Entry requirements

Entry requirement: GCSE Grade C+ in Drama. If you have not studied Drama at GCSE level, you must have a C in English Language and be able to demonstrate a commitment to Drama with participation in extra-curricular clubs/productions or within the local/national community.


AS Only

  • Component 1: Exploration and Performance
    60% weighting
    Internally assessed and externally moderated scripted group performance, monologue and supporting coursework
  • Component 2: Theatre Makers in Practice
    40% weighting
    Written examination

A Level Full Course

  • Component 1: Devising
    40% weighting
    Internally assessed and externally moderated devised performance with supporting coursework


  • Component 2: Text in Performance
    20% weighting
    Externally assessed scripted group and monologue performance
  • Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice
    40% weighting
    Written examination

Future opportunities

This course will benefit those students wanting to continue on to university level education in the subject, as well as preparing students for work in other areas of the performing arts industries.
