English Literature A Level at Queens Park Community School

Course description

Students will study for AS examinations at the end of year 12 and the full A level at the end of year 13.

Course content

The Year 13 Course
1. Love through the Ages – the same texts studied for AS.
2. Texts in Shared Contexts - WW1 and its Aftermath.
3. Non -Examination Assessment (Coursework): Texts across Time.

 

Entry requirements

At least grade 6 in English Language and English Literature GCSEs, good critical thinking skills and enjoyment of reading a wide variety of texts.

Assessment

Assessment
Paper 1: Love Through the Ages-3 hours (open book in section C only)
Section A: Shakespeare
You are required to write about a passage from the play Othello (extract printed on paper) and relate the extract to the wider play.
Section B: Unseen Poetry
You respond to two unseen poems (printed in the exam paper).
Section C: Comparing Texts
You are required to compare prose (Wuthering Heights or The Great Gatsby or both) to poetry AQA Anthology of Love Poetry through the Ages
(Pre-1900 or Post-1900)
40% of A level.
Paper 2: Texts in Shared Contexts- WW1 and its Aftermath: 2hrs 30mins open book
Section A: Set Texts You respond to one question on a core set text.
Section B: Contextual Linking
You answer one compulsory question on an unseen literary prose extract
and one question comparing two texts studied.
40% of A level Non- Examination Assessment
A comparative critical study of two texts
(at least one of which must have been written pre-1900) in the form of an extended essay (2500 words) and a bibliography.
20% of A level.
