Sport & Exercise Sciences BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at South Cheshire College

Course description

This course will help you discover the science behind sport and prepare you for a career in the fitness industry, or for a range of degree courses. The course consists of core modules covering the essentials of sports science, and you'll also study additional modules that will equip you with knowledge in a variety of subjects. The 6 core modules are anatomy for sport and exercise, sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, research methods for sport and exercise sciences, a research project and sports biomechanics in action. In addition to this you'll learn about fitness testing, sports and exercise massage (in our brand new sports massage room), sports nutrition and sports coaching, as well as getting plenty of practical work experience.

Course content

The course consists of core modules covering the essentials of sports science, and students will also study 12 other modules, chosen to provide a range of knowledge in a variety of subjects studied over 2 years.

The 6 core modules are:

  • Anatomy for sport and exercise;
  • Sport and exercise physiology;
  • Sport and exercise psychology;
  • Research methods for sport and exercise sciences;
  • Research project in sport and exercise sciences;
  • Sports biomechanics in action.

The other modules include:

  • Fitness testing;
  • Sports and exercise massage;
  • Sports nutrition;
  • Practical sports;
  • Sports coaching;
  • Work experience;

Other:

  • Enrichment / college sporting activities.

The course also involves a proportion of practical work. Such activity provides reference to your work and will encourage you to develop skills of enquiry, analysis, management and creativity as well as interpersonal skills which will be important in your work when you are on work placement and as your career progresses.

Entry requirements

For the Extended Diploma (2 years) you will need a minimum of: i) 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy), Core and Additional Science and Maths, ii) or a Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness (Merit) + 3 GCSEs grade A*-C (including Maths and Science), iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (Merit) + 4 GCSEs grade A*-C (including Maths and Science),

For the Subsidiary Diploma (1 year) you will need a minimum of: i) 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy), Core and Additional Science and Maths, ii) or a Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness (Pass) + 2 GCSEs grade A*-C (including Maths and Science), iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (Pass) + 3 GCSEs grade A*-C (including Maths and Science). A CRB check is required.

Assessment

All assessment is via coursework that is internally set and marked.

Future opportunities

Students who are successful have the option of going on to a Foundation Degree in Coaching and Fitness here at South Cheshire College with potential access to year 3 of an MMU degree programme, or a sports related course at many other universities. If they are fortunate, they can gain employment in hotel/health and fitness centres, fitness clubs, fitness instruction or coaching. Careers in any branch of the forces or emergency services are also appropriate.

    • South Cheshire College is situated in Dane Bank Avenue, Crewe and is ideally positioned for easy access. It is on major bus routes and is less than a 15 minute walk from the mainline railway station in Crewe. Junctions 16 and 17 of the M6 motorway are both only a 15 minute drive away and Manchester International airport is just 45 minutes away by rail or road.
