Arabic - A Level at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College

Course description

This is a two year course leading to an A Level in Arabic Language from Edexcel. The
full A Level is made up of the AS unit plus one more unit at a higher level. AS topics
will include: Everyday Life, Society and the Working World. Material comes from
authentic sources. A2 focuses on knowledge and understanding of the culture of the
Arab countries. The topics will cover Environment, Citizenship and the International
Context. There is also an option of choosing a text to study for the exam.

Course content

This is a two year course leading to an A Level in Arabic Language from Edexcel. The
full A Level is made up of the AS unit plus one more unit at a higher level. AS topics
will include: Everyday Life, Society and the Working World. Material comes from

Arab countries. The topics will cover Environment, Citizenship and the International
Context. There is also an option of choosing a text to study for the exam.

Entry requirements

You will need six full GCSEs at grades A* to C, including English Language and Arabic. A native speaker who has a good standard of reading and writing with reasonable knowledge of English may also take it.

Assessment

The AS unit is 50% of the A Level. There is no coursework. There will be a 2 hour 45
minute examination, externally set and assessed. It consists of three sections which
test reading, translation and writing. It focuses on acquisition of the language, grammar and vocabulary. You can take it on its own, if you wish so, or you can decide at the end of it to take a full A Level qualification.
 
The second unit also consists of three sections: Section One: The candidate will be
required to read a text in Arabic then answer questions in Arabic. There is also a
piece of contemporary text to be translated from English to Arabic. Section Two:
There will be a choice of two questions on each topic and text. Section Three:
Discursive essay: one question to be answered from a choice of four.

 

Future opportunities

On completing this course successfully in conjunction with other subjects, the
student might go on to study a degree in Arabic, Islamic studies, Oriental Studies,
Languages or Education. In a combination, A Level Arabic can get you to university
to study any subject. There is also a chance to work with local communities.
Employment in Arab oil countries can be easier with A Level Arabic. The chance of
obtaining a place in a university in Arab countries to study Arabic or Islamic studies
will be improved.

    • Our new 40 million pound state-of-the-art building and garden opened its doors in September 2008. We think it's one of the best college campuses in the UK - and it's now official. We are delighted that our new campus has been awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for the best public building in the UK.

      The Chamberlain Health & Fitness Centre comprises a gym with state-of-the-art cardiovascular, resistance and cable equipment. The Sports Hall is able to host a wide range of sports and we provide sporting activities that cater for students with all levels of abilities and sporting performance.
       
      The Recording Studio is a fantastic music facility which utilises the latest digital technology. They have been designed to give students the opportunity to create industry standard work.
       
      Music Practice Rooms are fantastic facilities for bands and ensembles to practice, as well as being an environment for solo practice.
       
      The Main Hall is a fully-equipped professional performance space capable of holding audiences in excess of 200. It has become the venue for a variety of exciting performances and events. 
       
      The Film Studio has high specification facilities for film studio for video and sound recording as well as a chromakeycurtain/green screen for superimposing video work onto any background.
       
      The Learning Resources Suite with both book and online resources, supervised support and guidance. Stock is selected to not only underpin the curriculum but to encourage leisure interests and reading for pleasure. The Learning Resources Suite provides not only the library but adjacent facilities for drop-in computer use and a separate group study area. In addition, a wide range of information about careers and higher education, in both electronic and paper form, is available.
       
      The Science Department contains eight state-of-the-art laboratories catering for all the science curricula delivered in the College.
       
      We have extensive network of, wired and wireless, computers have high speed internet connections giving you unlimited access to the World Wide Web. Creative departments such as Art, Design & Media are fully furnished with state of the art iMacs. Alongside these students will have access to MacBook’s for independent work. The iMacs and MacBook’s are equipped with professional software allowing high quality production of video, graphics and photography work. Art & Design facilities also include specialist pottery equipment and photographic dark rooms.
       
      Research 
      Success in your courses depends on many things, not least the research facilities available to you. Our high level resources, specifically designed to support the sixth form College curriculum, will give you the best chance of success.
      However, we realise that the vast amount of information available can make searching difficult so our teachers build the best internet resources into courses, giving you the most appropriate links for your particular syllabus. And of course, books. The library has thousands of copies available for loan with additional copies for reference.
       
      New building opening September 2015
      We are opening a new state of the art extension to the main College building in September 2015. This will comprise of high tech science laboratories, classrooms and communal break out spaces for students.
