Photography A Level at Stanley Park High School

Course description

This course will help you develop practical, critical and contextual work in areas of Photography. The emphasis in component 1 will be on the development of understanding and skills using an appropriate range of material, processes and techniques, whether this is to build a portfolio or through a personal area of study. Component 2 is set externally by AQA and candidates are required to select one of the five questions issued. Examination papers are issued from the 1st February. The areas in Photography to be explored could be; portraiture, landscape photography, still life photography, documentary photography or photojournalism, fashion photography, experimental imagery multimedia, photographic instillation, and moving image (video, film, animation).

Course content


Component 1 Portfolio and Personal Investigation
60% of A-level
No time limit; 96 marks
Personal Investigation supported by written element of 1000-3000 words, set and marked by the centre and moderated by AQA

Component 2 Externally Set Assignment
40% of A-Level
Preparatory period + 15 hours supervised time; 96 marks
Work produced will be marked by Centre and moderated by AQA

Entry requirements

A Level - 5 A*-C Grades
It is essential you have a GCSE in either Art and Design or Media, this should be a level C grade or above

Future opportunities

Progression to higher levels of study e.g. degree level entry exploring an area within the A level course you have enjoyed or would like to explore further. Career can lead to a professional photography, camera operator, work in TV or film, animator, architect, art therapist, exhibition designer, fashion designer/photographer, illustrator or educator.
