Course description

Biology develops the ability to think through and develop ideas. Emphasis is placed on practical skills that stimulate interest and understanding and develop investigative skills.

This Biology course looks at the microscopic world such as cells and molecules like DNA, through to the macroscopic world such as plant and animal behaviour and the way the human body works.

The course includes the study of many topical issues, such as HIV, genetic fingerprinting and cancer.

The course consists of four topic modules and six assessed practical investigations in each year. Visits and speakers illustrate the relevance of the subject to future careers. Fieldwork provides an excellent opportunity to practise biological techniques at a site of special scientific interest

Entry requirements

5 4-9 grades at GCSE including Level 4 in English and Mathematics and at least 5 Grade in Core and Additional Science or a 5 grade in GCSE Biology.

Future opportunities

Biology can open up careers such as animal technicians, nature conservation officer, pathologists, doctors, pharmacologists, research scientists, dentists, opticians and brewers.
