English Literature A2 AQA at Longdean School
This course will appeal to you if you have an interest in reading a wide variety of examples of literature and enjoy expressing your opinions and justifying your comments on texts. It will also help you develop your critical analytical and creative writing skills. You will read a variety of texts: drama, fiction, and poetry. A2 At A2, Unit 3 teaches candidates to develop ideas on the significance of genre. Texts will be grouped within the categories: Elements of the Gothic and Elements of the Pastoral. In Unit 4, candidates will study a wide range of texts, the different ways of reading texts and critical ideas applied with discrimination to literary texts. • Unit Three – Texts and Genres. The aim of this unit is to develop ideas established during the AS course. Individual texts will be explored and evaluated against some of the commonly accepted principles of the chosen genre, and three texts (or more) will be compared as representatives of that genre. • Unit Four – Coursework: Further and Independent Reading. The first aim of this unit is to introduce candidates to the study of a wide range of texts, some of which may be of their own choosing. The second is to introduce candidates to different ways of reading texts for study, including independently. The third is to introduce candidates to some critical ideas and for these ideas to be applied to literary text. Students must be able therefore to demonstrate that they have read widely. How is the course examined or assessed? The course will be examined by coursework (30%) and examination paper (70%). The quality of written communication will be assessed in all units.
English Literature is one of the most universally accepted qualifications for entry to Higher Education. It forms a basis for further specialist study of Literature at degree level. Qualifications in English can lead to careers in journalism, media work, advertising, business, publishing, management, the law ... even teaching.You will follow this course with two or three other AS levels or an Advanced Diploma and, additionally, the compulsory core such as PSHE, RE, PE/Games
