Course description
This is a 2 year full time course.
About The Course
This course is aimed at people who want to pursue a professional career in the construction or civil engineering industry. It is recognised as a formal progression path towards gaining higher level qualifications in a wide range of professional careers within construction.
During the course you will research and observe building techniques including both scientific and physical principles that are involved within construction practices. You will study the methods used for measuring and tendering work including costing operations to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. You will also examine the design and administration of construction projects. The course includes being involved in practical surveying for land and buildings. You will experience producing and working with architects’ plans, utilising the latest CAD technology. All the assignments are delivered and learnt by completing projects and assignments which are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and the individual demands of that locality.
The Construction route will focus on buildings, towers and bridges and other structures built above the ground.
You will be required to study functional skills or GCSE English and maths if you do not already hold a minimum of GCSE grade 4. (Many universities and employers ask for a minimum of GCSE grade 4 in both maths and English).
Personal Study Time
Students are expected to work independently on project work away from the college.
Will this course suit me?
This course will suit you if you are interested in a career as a trainee quantity surveyor, building surveyor, architectural technologist, construction manager or civil engineer.
Qualification Title
BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction.
This course carries UCAS points equivalent to 3 A levels. Please check the UCAS website for more details.
Entry requirements
5 GCSE’s at 4 -9 / A*-C or acceptable alternatives including Science, English Language and Maths.
Assessment
You will be assessed by written assignments for each unit which will be marked against a set criteria and graded pass, merit or distinction.

At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.
Free meals
If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.
Travel passes
Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.
