BTEC Sport at Ilfracombe Academy

Course description

Year on year the sport and active leisure sector outperforms the rest of the UK economy; this has been the case since the end of the economic recession of the late 1990s and researchers predict it will continue to be the case for years to come, long after the sports legacy of London 2012.

BTEC Nationals in Sport provide an introduction to the sector for learners looking to build a career in sport. Areas include careers in exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development and the outdoors.

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport will give students a solid foundation in the sector, enabling them to develop essential skills required for gaining employment, securing career progression, or progressing to higher education and training.

The course offers a greater amount of flexibility and more of a ‘hands on’ and practical learning experience then A Level. It is also entirely assignment/coursework based, enabling students to accurately track progress throughout the two years and relieving the pressure of a big end of year examination.

Future opportunities

The subject is a good basis to progress into Higher Education and careers in Sport Science, Teaching, Sports Psychology, Sports Medicine, Physiotherapy and all aspects of the Recreation and Leisure Industries. It will be equally valuable as a supporting qualification leading to other types of course in Higher Education or Career opportunities. Physical Education combines well with most subjects, eg, with Business Studies leading to Sports Management or with Biology leading to Physiotherapy
