Photography A Level at Coombeshead Academy
In this A Level and AS Level course students develop an interest in, enthusiasm for,
and enjoyment of Photography. The programme of study will stimulate students’:-
- intuitive capabilities
- technical and expressive skills
- aesthetic understanding and critical judgement
Students are encouraged to develop an independence of mind so they can refine
and communicate their own ideas and intentions creating their own personal
In Photography the focus is initially on developing students’ understanding on how
a camera works, both traditional and digital. This is followed by darkroom practical
There is also comprehensive teaching of Photoshop. This understanding then
enables students to produce and create a range of creative digital outcomes.
With a real focus on critical understanding, students produce sketchbook journals as well as finished outcomes.
Evidence of ability demonstrated with examples of work may be accepted in place
of a high grade GCSE but usually students will have obtained at least grade B.
Students are assessed through the production of pieces of work created in response
to a question set by the Examination Board. Four areas are assessed.
Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by
contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and
processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on
work and progress
Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where
appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
This group of Art A Levels are accepted by Higher Education institutions for University
entrance and can be combined with almost any other subject.
A good A Level grade would secure a place at Art College if aiming for a career in
some aspect of Art and Design.
Not only are there a huge range of career possibilities for Art College graduates
students could study Fashion, Photography, Film, etc. as well as embark on careers
such as Teaching or Occupational Therapy.
