This qualification is designed for pupils who are interested in pursuing a career in the engineering sector and who are interested in engineering technology. The qualification could lead to further study in engineering, or learners could proceed into an engineering related apprenticeship or employment.
The main purpose is to allow learners to develop the core specialist knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector. Learners would take this qualification if they wanted an introductory qualification to develop some of the fundamental skills and knowledge required by employers in the engineering industry.
Potential Topics that will be studied
This qualification will provide the core technical knowledge required for preparing to work in the engineering industry and reflects the nature of modern engineering. This knowledge is taught across eight units:
- Unit One: Materials, Science & Technology
- Unit Two: Mechanical Systems
- Unit Three: Mathematics for Engineers
- Unit Four: Engineering Design
- Unit Five: Production and Manufacturing
- Unit Six: Design Visualisation
- Unit Seven: Advanced Design for Manufacture
- Unit Eight: Design Engineer Project Management
Students need to achieve 5 9-5 GCSE grades including English (and a minimum of a grade 5 in Science). In addition, students must achieve a 6 grade in either Mathematics or Science as well as a grade 6 or Merit in an Engineering L2 course or similar Design Technology course.
An interview is also required and students may be asked to complete some induction tasks prior to being accepted on the course.
Course assessment takes place in a variety of ways including externally assessed written and practical assignments, internally assessed written and practical assignments and written examinations.
Progression and career opportunities
This engineering course allows you to gain essential employability skills, valued by employers and training agencies alike. You may be able to progress onto further Level 4 qualifications at college or university or pursue an apprenticeship with an employer. This course gives you the essential practical and theoretical knowledge to progress in an engineering career.
