Biology at The Pingle School
There are two written units and one coursework unit in each year of the biology course. Unit tests are taken in June with the coursework unit also being submitted in June.
These are some of the topics included in units 1 and 2:
biological molecules, cell transport, lung structure and function, heart structure and function, pathogens, diseases of the heart and lungs, enzymes and digestion, variety in living organisms, variation, classification and plant transport, the genetic code and cell division.
These are some of the topics included in units 4 and 5:
populations and ecosystems, nutrient cycles, inheritance, nervous control, muscles and movement, homeostasis, protein synthesis, genetic technology, photosynthesis and respiration.
Any student entering the course must have achieved a grade B GCSE in biology or B in GCSE science and additional science. Grade C in GCSE mathematics and English are also essential.
